I've owned a few of these now, and every time one comes through our doors I'm reminded why the ID.4 keeps finding its way into the hands of really happy owners. It's not the flashiest EV on the market, it won't win a drag race against a Model 3 Performance, and it doesn't try to be something it's not. What it is, though, is one of the most well-rounded, genuinely liveable electric SUVs available in New Zealand right now, and the JDM spec in particular comes loaded with equipment that puts it well ahead of what many buyers expect.

The instant torque of the electric motor makes getting a loaded trailer moving from a standstill completely effortless, no hunting for revs, no gear selection, just immediate, smooth pull.

How it drives - more fun than you'd expect

The ID.4 Pro is rear-wheel drive, and on New Zealand's roads, which include more than a few decent stretches of twisty tarmac, that matters. The battery pack sits low in the floor giving the ID.4 a low centre of gravity, and the wide track gives it a stability and planted feel that SUVs with a higher centre of gravity simply can't match.

On New Zealand's twisting regional roads, the ID.4 handles with a composure and confidence that pleasantly surprises people expecting a soft, uninvolving family hauler. It's not a sports car, it's an SUV, but it flows through corners tidily, feels genuinely secure at speed, and rewards a driver who wants to make progress on a back road without the anxiety of something floaty and unsettled.

The instant torque means overtaking is effortless and safe. The 20-inch Hamar wheels fill the arches well and contribute to the planted feel. And the adaptive suspension, tuned for ride quality in Comfort mode, firmer and more responsive in Sport, means you can genuinely match the car's behaviour to whatever the road is doing.

In Comfort mode on a long motorway run, the cabin is impressively quiet, well-isolated from both road and wind noise, which makes a genuine difference on a three-hour family drive.

Interior and everyday life

The cabin of the JDM ID.4 Pro is a genuinely nice place to spend time. The Nutmeg two-tone grey and brown leatherette seating looks premium and holds up well in family use, the panoramic sunroof opens the cabin up considerably, and the 30-colour ambient lighting can be quietly tasteful or as bold as you want it to be depending on your mood.

The 360-degree Around View Camera deserves a particular mention, it makes parking in tight urban spaces, reversing a trailer onto a boat ramp, or navigating a narrow campground remarkably stress-free. For a family SUV that does everything from school runs to road trips, it's one of the most practically useful features on the car.

The powered tailgate with auto-open and close is another one of those features that sounds like a luxury until you've used it daily with arms full of groceries or a pushchair. After a week you wonder how you managed without it.

The ErgoActive memory seats are a genuine comfort advantage on longer drives, properly supportive with good adjustment range, and the memory function means different drivers in the family can each have their own saved position.

The 10-inch infotainment system with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto is clean and responsive. Most owners default to CarPlay or Android Auto for navigation, which is a perfectly reasonable approach, both integrate well and the wireless connection means no cable clutter in the cabin.
